Choose Your Weapon: Handheld Gaming Systems
Much is made about the console wars – Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft duking it out for dominance in the home gaming console market. However, for those looking to play outside the home there are two main options to choose from:
Nintendo 3DS: 169.99
The latest entry in the DS family of handheld consoles, the 3DS features two screens, one of which is touch sensitive. The touch screen can be operated with an included stylus or with the finger, and this auxiliary screen can be used to affect gameplay on the main screen. New in this version of the device is remarkably good 3D technology that brings out the action on the main screen. With classic titles like Super Mario Land, Mario Kart, Legend of Zelda: Ocarena of Time, and Kingdom Hearts, the 3DS is clearly aimed to please a younger demographic of gamers.
Playstation Vita: 249.99
The Vita looks very similar to Sony’s last handheld, the Playstation Portable (PSP), but adds a more powerful processor, sharper display, and both front and back touch screens for a unique handheld experience. The Vita is also capable of more than just gaming as it can play back movies and music and connects with Sony’s Playstation Store for added connectivity. The system is targeted more toward those who already own a Playstation 3 as its offerings include games from the popular Uncharted, Assassin’s Creed, Sly Cooper, LittleBigPlanet, and Resistance series from the PS3. In addition, the Vita seems as though it will also play a much more integral role in the recently announced Playstation 4.
These two systems, though they have similar features, have distinct differences. Those looking for a near-console-quality experience with more core games may be interested in the Vita, while those who cherish classic Nintendo games and perhaps a more relaxed playing style will be drawn to the 3DS.
